Ways to Style a Trench Coat

Hello! Welcome to my latest blog post, thank you for joining me.

Today I will be focusing on ways to wear a trench coat. I think trench coats are perfect for this time of year when there is still a chill in the air! Even more so this year as we are currently all socialising outside, it’s good to have that additional layer. They also instantly uplift an outfit and made even the most casual of outfits look put together.

This blog will be another two part one as I have six outfits to talk you through.

Let’s start with the trench coat itself, I have gone for a cream trench coat as opposed to the traditional tan colour, why you might ask? Well it was on sale 😂. Also I already have coats in the tan colour and didn’t think I needed to add another one to my large collection!

My one is from H&M and is reduced to £23, it comes in and out of stock regularly, so add it to your favourites and keep your eye on it! They also do it in the traditional colour, powder pink and black but these colours ways are full price, which at £34.99 is not exactly expensive, I just love a bargain!

Some alternatives for you. Everyone on Instagram is talking about this oversized one , so it seems to be the coat of the moment! The reviews say that it comes up large so you might want to size down. H&M also have another trench coat that comes in both cream and a nice beige colour if you didn’t want the oversized look. Also just to spoil you I have another alternative, which isn’t actually from H&M!! Ultamodan have a lovely one that is a little more expensive than the other ones but it is currently half price, so still a good buy.

Ok now on to the outfits….

Outfit one

I have started with a classic office look as we all start to think about the transition back to the office and out of our loungewear! I have actually been trying to dress more “for the office” recently, just to go to my desk in the lounge, otherwise all my lovely clothes won’t leave the wardrobe. Check out my Instagram @whatkatyworenext to see this in action. This long sleeved top is a burnt orange colour and I picked it up in the Zara sale. (I actually picked it up in orange, black and grey but who’s counting!) It is now out of stock but I have found one from ASOS that is a really similar colour and currently with 60% off. I have teamed it with these brown checked trousers, I have gone for a formal look, but you could dress them down as well as the drawstring detail gives a bit of a joggers vibe, let’s go slow with the transition from loungewear! These are also Zara and currently out of stock, however I have found these ones from Pretty Little Thing that will give you the same look. If you didn’t want the drawstring waist this alternative from The White Stuff might be the way to go, they look super comfy and you could pick the pink or blue out of the check and wear a top that colour. Just got distracted looking at the White Stuff sale, they have some good pieces in there!

Next up the shoes, these are a new purchase from H&M and I am hoping they will be comfortable, they are a good heel height for me, not too high! They are currently in the sale so there are only limited sizes remaining, so I have found another similar pair for you with braided detailing, I actually think I might pick these up in white to go with maxi dresses in the summer. Lastly my handbag is from ASOS about a year ago now, but this alternative from Accessorize is a good colour match in a cross body version.

Outfit two

Next up I think this would be a good look for a little lunch date in a beer garden somewhere. Firstly please excuse my fringe, hairdressers is booked for Saturday and I can’t wait as it is out of control! Let’s start with this shirt, I love it! It’s a satin material and could be mistaken for the top from some silk pyjamas 😂 but it was from the shirt section! They do have matching trousers available but I wouldn’t wear the matching set! I actually saw this on someone I follow on Instagram, The Silver Mermaid and I wouldn’t have been able to find it without her link as they seem to have hidden it deep in the H&M website, it in currently out of stock but you know what H&M is like, it will probably be back soon. I did struggle to find alternatives to this as I think it is a pretty unusual piece but I have a couple of options, firstly this pretty blouse from Ted Baker would give a similar look, or this one from River Island is more of the silky satin material, just in a bolder colour. Now the River Island one is a pyjama top, but I have seen it styled on Instagram with some jeans so I think it would work!

My light blue jeans are another recent purchase from H&M and I think the lighter denim works really well with the cream of the coat. I have just realised this outfit is a full H&M one! They have so much good stuff in at the moment, I start saving what I am going to buy next month to my favourites like two weeks before payday 😂. My sandals are here and they are really comfy, they also come in multiple colours, the brown ones are on the aforementioned favourites list. Lastly my little handbag, this one seems to sell out in minutes, along with the bigger tote version. I shared links to these back on my wears to wear white jeans post and I have seen a couple of people pick these up in store now that they are back open. This Ted Baker camera bag from House of Fraser is a nice alternative, a bit more expensive but a good treat item. Looking on the House of Fraser website is dangerous, they have so many great handbags 😍

Outfit three

For my last outfit for part one, I have gone for an evening look, dinner and drinks maybe. I have also used the belt on the trench coat to create a slightly different look with it this time. My necklace is just a cheap one I picked up from somewhere a couple of years ago, but this one from Oliver Bonas is similar and in the sale! The pink stone would add a pop of colour to a neutral outfit. This dress is a long sleeved body con one from H&M which is out of stock so I have some other options. New Look have one with a collar detail that would work for this look, currently there are only limited sizes left though. NA-KD also have one that looks super similar to the H&M one, this website is a new one for me but I will definitely be checking them out!

My shoes are the same as outfit one and my handbag is an old New Look one that is no longer available. You can’t see well in this picture but it actually has some wicker detailing on the front. I have found some other options. Firstly this one from Katie Loxton is really cute and features a nice bamboo handle and cross body strap. Of course I had to include a H&M option 😂 and I think this round straw bag is so nice for spring/summer and would work well with so many outfits.

That’s it for part one of styling a trench coat, stay tuned for part two which will be up in a few days! I hope you enjoyed reading.
